Magellan made stops at various locations such as the Canary Islands, discovered what is now called the Strait of Magellan, and the Mariana Islands. He stopped his journey when he died in the Philippines, and he willed Juan Sebastian Elcano to take over the rest of the way across the Indian Ocean, and around the tip of the Cape of Good Hope.
